Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Temporary/Interim Finance Director to lead the Finance Department. This role is responsible for overseeing all municipal financial operations, including budgeting, accounting, audit coordination, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate brings deep public sector finance experience and the ability to step in immediately to stabilize and improve operations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and supervise all financial activities, including accounting, budgeting, payroll, purchasing, treasury, and reporting functions.
• Prepare and manage the city’s annual budget, forecasts, and multi-year financial plans.
• Ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal financial regulations and reporting requirements.
• Coordinate and support the external audit process, including preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR).
• Oversee fund accounting, grants management, capital project tracking, and internal controls.
• Advise City leadership on financial strategy, funding options, and fiscal impacts of policy decisions.
• Implement and improve financial policies, procedures, and systems.
• Manage and mentor Finance Department staff during the contract period.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, or related field; Master’s or CPA strongly preferred.
• 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in public sector finance or municipal accounting, with prior leadership experience.
• Deep knowledge of GASB standards, fund accounting, and municipal budgeting.
• Experience with governmental ERP systems (e.g., Tyler Munis, Infor, or similar).
• Strong analytical, leadership, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently, quickly assess department needs, and deliver results in a limited timeframe.

• Contract duration: 3 months with potential for extension.
• Schedule: Onsite
• Compensation: $50hr range
